GEORGE HARRISON'S U.K. SINGLES
DISCOGRAPHY |
"There is no reason why we should ever play together. Listen to the music. Would George ever flourished like he did? No chance! There was no room....By the time the Beatles reached their peak, we were limiting our capacity to write and perform by having it fit into some kind of format..." -- John Lennon, taken from "The Beatles Tapes", an interview with David Wigg (on Polydor records, July 1976) reflecting on the breakup of the Beatles. Ah, George Harrison...known always as the quiet and mystic Beatle by his fans. The early Beatle days for George had him relegated mainly as the lead guitarist and "sometimes composer" on "With the Beatles" and "Help!" albums. George's musical maturity can really be seen developing by the middle of the Beatles music career on "Rubber Soul" and "Revolver" albums with songs like: "Think for Yourself; If I Needed Someone; I Want to Tell You; Love You To; and Taxman." George finally reached the height of his musical craftsmanship with beautiful songs such as "Something" and "Here Comes Sun" found on the Abbey Road album. During the last two or three years of the Beatles career, George had been composing and developing an enormous backlog of songs, thus, in 1970 - when "All Things Must Pass" was released - fans were given the "jackpot" right away. "My Sweet Lord" backed with "Isn't It A Pity" soared to #1 chart position on January 23, 1971 in the United Kingdom. His next follow-up single was "Bangla Desh" and peaked at #10 on August 14, 1971 (this single became the "swan song" for his triple live album set - "The Concert for Bangla Desh" which was acclaimed "Album of the Year" by the Grammy Awards). His next album "Living In the Material World" spawned the hit single: "Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Ea rth)" and on June 2, 1973, the single reached #8th position on the music charts. Subsequent singles were issued over the years with each song having some modest degree of success. The songs most remembered for their radio air play were: "Blow Away", "All Those Years Ago", "Cheer Down" and Rudy Clark's "Got My Mind Set On You". Throughout his career, George has been an active composer writing for other artists such as Ringo Starr; Ronnie Spector; Jackie Lomax; Ravi Shankar as well as his side-kick group: the Traveling Wilburrys. In 1992, Billboard Magazine bestowed him the "Century Award" for his outstanding artistic accomplishments to the music industry. George has won a total of 6 Grammy awards throughout his musical career...not bad for the "quiet one". |
