INTRODUCTION:
Presented here is The Ottawa Hit Parade from January 11, to April 25, 1964. The statistics were compiled in conjunction with Canadian Music News and appeared each Saturday in The Ottawa Journal's music section called: "Off The Record - Hit Parade" alongside Sandy Gardiner's articles. To make this a little more entertaining for readers interested in where the Beatles placed in the charts on the local hit parade, I have added historical footnotes after the end of each chart. This information was retrieved from micro-film at the Ottawa Public Library and referenced as well from my personal collection of Beatle books and magazines.

FLASHBACK -- Love Me Do was released in Canada on February 4, 1963. Capitol Records of Canada President Paul White recalls how the Beatles first single released in North America came about: "I use to listen to about fifty new records a week....Then one day I put on "Love Me Do" by a group called the Beatles. I immediately sat up and took notice. The sound was so different, so completely fresh....I did like them a lot and wanted Capitol Canada to get in on the ground floor. I decided to release the Beatles' records in Canada." Canada's Official Beatle Fan Club President at the time was Trudy Medcalf who also was a registered member of Britain's Official Fan Club. -- Source for quote: OUR HEARTS WENT BOOM by Brian Kendall, published by VIKING Press, 1997

FLASHBACK -- A MEDIA PERSEPECTIVE ON THE MANIA AND THE ADVERTISING!!!

The Saturday Evening Post reports in their March 21, 1964 edition: "These are the Beatles, four young men who brought with them to America a phenomenon known as Beatlemania. So far, Beatlemania has traveled over two continents. In Stockholm the arrival of the Beatles was greeted with teen-age riots. In Paris another congregation held screeching services at the airport and the Beatles' performances at the Olympia Theatre were sold out for three weeks. In the Beatles' native Liverpool 60 youngsters collapsed from exposure after standing all night in a mile-long line of 12,000 waiting to buy tickets to the Beatles performance. When a foreman shut off the radio in the middle of a Beatles record at a textile mill in Lancashire, 200 girls went out on strike."

Regarding the advertising from Capitol Records in the USA, the company "poured $50,000 into a promotional campaign." Claimed Capitol's V.P. Voyle Gilmore: "Sure there was a lot of hype, but all the hype in the world isn't going to sell a bad product."

FLASHBACK -- When teenage baby-boomers began growing up during 1964, we probably took a lot of our fundamental rights and freedoms for granted. How lucky we all were in North America to have watched those first three Ed Sullivan "live television" presentations of the Beatles or for those in England, seeing them televised on BBC broadcasts. Not likely were many of us thinking how Communist East Germany at the time, could restrict a person's free choice to view the type of TV show they felt they should watch. For example, in a Associated Press report dated February 13, 1964, describes how a "railway worker" was sentenced by an East German Court "to 3-1/2 years imprisonment because he bought devices intended to receive Western (television) telecasts." Suffice to say, one wonders what the East German's government reaction might have been towards a Paris or Stockholm television signal beaming in with teeny-boppers screaming at four lads who delighted their fans with beat tunes of "All My Loving" and "I Want To Hold Your Hand." It wouldn't be until the release of the Beatles "Yellow Submarine" did the communist regimes start to take note of how interesting Lennon and McCartney compositions were.

FLASHBACK -- BEATLES HUMOR SHINES!

Upon arriving in America, the Beatles off-beat humor became immediately apparent during this "question and answer" exchange between themselves and the press:

Q: "Will you sing for us?" someone asked.
A: "We need money first," said John
Q: "What's your message for American teenagers?"
A: "Our message is...buy some more Beatle records," returned Paul McCartney
Q: "What about the movement in Detroit to stamp out the Beatles?"
A: "We're starting a movement to stamp out Detroit."
Q: "Do you hope to take anything home with you?"
A: "Rockefeller Center."
Q: "What do you think of Beethoven?"
A: "I love him," said Ringo Starr. "Especially his poems."
Q: "Don't you guys ever get a haircut?"
A: "I just had one yesterday," said George. Ringo then added: "You should have seen him the day before."

Interestingly enough, respected Beatle author Ray Coleman in his book "Brian Epstein - The Man Who Made the Beatles", reports that Brian had watched his Beatles second performance of the Ed Sullivan Show from his Miami hotel room while wearing a "Stamp Out the Beatles" sweater!

FLASHBACK -- Though teenage fans really went wild for the Beatles, the Milwaukee Sentinel newspaper's editorial declared: "Fortress America has been breached. The Beatles, unkempt, untalented, lunatic noisemakers, are inside our gates. The kindest thing we can say about their homeland is that here is the final crushing evidence that the sun has set on the British Empire."

FLASHBACK -- Mrs A.C. McMillan, an elderly woman, had this to say when she sent in her letter to The Ottawa Journal regarding the Beatles appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show:

"Sirs: -- After watching the Beatles on the Sullivan Show last Sunday, may I put in my two cents' worth opinion?

I think they are four clever and intelligent young men who have gotten together and are satirizing all guitar-strumming and wailing ones who have preceded them, the public has fallen for it.

I am in my seventies but enjoyed the boys for themselves not for the show they put on." MRS. A.C. McMILLAN. 5 Raleigh Street, Ottawa.

FLASHBACK -- BEATLEMANIA! WHAT WAS THE FUSS ALL ABOUT?

Beatle author Brian Kendall reports that "across Canada, teenage boys started combing their hair down in front, Beatle-style. Outraged school principals banned the look because of its so-called disruptive influence. Four boys attending Ottawa's Lisgar Collegiate were ordered to comb their hair differently or stay at home. The principal at Vancouver's St. George's school told an offender that he could keep the new style if he also wore short pants to show how immature he was. F.L. Burnham, principal of Sir Winston Churchill School in Vancouver, explained that he couldn't permit anything outlandish that might cause giggling and other foolery in class."

Kendall went on to report in his book: "No act in entertainment history had ever made this type of impact -- not Frank Sinatra, not even Elvis Presley when he exploded onto the scene several years ago." Meanwhile, New York Times reporter John A. Osmundsen outlined the psychologists and psychiatrists viewpoints regarding the sociological impact of the Beatles as being symbols of: 1) "Adolescent revolt against parental authority;" 2) "Status that comes from belonging to a group (of other Beatlemaniacs); 3) "Sex, both from the supposed erotic nature of The Beatles' music and the way they perform it and from the appeal they seem to have the "mother instinct." 4) "Success by persons who are seen as fellow teenagers (although none of The Beatles is under 21 years of age) and as "underdogs" who came from the wrong side of the tracks and have made good." 5) "The frenetically felt urgency for having a good time and living life fast in an uncertain world plagued with mortal dangers."

"Any or all of those explanations of Beatlemania may be more or less correct..."

FLASHBACK -- Did we ever imagine, for one moment back then, that all of our Beatle records and memorabilia would one day be worth a lot of money? Not a chance! But one Beatle collector who seemed to "go over-the-top" as it were, scooped up a lot Beatle memorabilia. The AP news service reported on September 4, 1964 about a 16-year-old female fan by the name of Geone Regester for holding the record for most Beatle pictures: 8,820 of them! Said Geone Regester, "The have cost me about 50 pounds but the Beatles are worth every penny."

FLASHBACK-- MALES BITTEN BY BEATLE WIG FASHION

TORONTO (CP) -- Males, not females, have been bitten by the latest wig fashion craze here.

The wigs are patterned on the shaggy hair styles of Britain's rock 'n' roll singers, The Beatles. They're being sold for $29.29 (note: today, they're now worth $150.00!) in nine shades -- black with a white streak, medium and light brown, dark and medium blonde, off-white, red.

Boys have been his best customers, Cohen says, although some girls are interested in looking like Beatles.

Wigs are socially acceptable, he adds, if it's obvious that they're wigs. He admits, however, that business hasn't been booming.

FLASHBACK -- Locally, the demand for Beatle albums was much greater than anticipated. The Ottawa Journal reported in their newspaper about a deal which was made between Capitol Records of Canada and the RCA Victor pressing plant in Smith Falls...RCA was contracted to work around-the-clock turning out Beatle records just to keep up with the demand from fans. On other news, nationally, the Beatles performed in three Canadian cities during their 1964 tour: Vancouver's "Empire Stadium" on August 22; Toronto's "Maple Leaf Gardens" on September 7; and Montreal's "The Forum" on September 8 (the first and only time they would play in Montreal because someone gave advance notice of intent to shoot Ringo! The Beatles honored the contract but never returned to Montreal to perform as result of the threat.)

FLASHBACK -- The Saturday Evening Post covered off an article on the Beatles for their August 8-15 edition which included coverage of "A Hard Day's Night", the Beatles first critically acclaimed major motion picture. On noting their international fame and success, then 34-year-old Alan Williams had this to say: "...the Beatles don't belong to Liverpool anymore, they belong to the world. You know, I used to manage the Beatles. It was all done on a handshake. One bloody nasty paper said I now cry myself to sleep. That's ridiculous. I couldn't have done what their present manager, Brian Epstein, did for them."

FLASHBACK -- In that same August 8-15 Saturday Evening Post edition, the middle of summer saw a phenomenal growth rate in the number of bands being born in Liverpool: "1 out of every 15 Liverpudlians" reported the Post, "between the ages of 15 and 24 now belongs to a rock 'n' roll group. Some of them work for as little as five dollars a night, some for nothing, but most don't work at all. There are in Liverpool some 350 music groups...." With the major influx of new bands, the more professional ones rarely played at the Cavern, thus, as then 26-year-old Mersey Beat editor Bill Harry who covered the Cavern for his paper so quickly pointed out: "The rot has set in. Success has turned the scene rotten. It has sapped the energy and made a very happy scene a rat race."

Hohner, Inc., the century-old music instrument makers, a harmonica set starring the Beatles is being marketed throughout the United States.
