JOHN LENNON'S U.K. SINGLES DISCOGRAPHY |
When one views John Lennon's solo career after the Beatles disbanded, his music truthfully revealed an honest biographical accounting of his personal beliefs, life struggles and optimisms from 1970 right up until 1980. Examples of this run the gambit from the harrowing vocal performance of "Cold Turkey" - a song about the withdrawal symptoms of heroin or other illicit drugs - to the age of instant coffee, instant breakfasts, and easy sex, for which John summed up those times of self-gratification and over-indulgence with his magnificent recording of "Instant Karma". In spite of a world filled with political unrest in the early '70's, John's eternal air of optimism stayed firm by writing two classic songs which are generally recognized and loved by most music fans around world : "Imagine" and "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)". His solo work displayed a far less tongue-in-cheek approach to his lyrics and music than he had shown while he was in the Beatles...the bulk of John's solo work has Lennon cutting to the chase as quickly as possible ("How Do You Sleep?" is a classic example). Said John: "...that's why I started from "Mother" onwards trying to shave off all imagery, pretensions of poetry, illusions of grandeur, I call it a la Dylan, Dylanesque, you know. I didn't write any of that. Just say what it is, simple English, make it rhyme and put a backbeat on it and express yourself as simply as possible, straightforwardly as possible. As they say, Northern people are blunt...so I was trying to write like I am and I enjoy the poetic side..."* Ironically, this quote was made just after the release of John & Yoko's "Double Fantasy" in 1980 and, in keeping true to himself, once again his songs were biographical: "Watching the Wheels" told his fans that after deliberately stepping out of the rock'n'roll spot-light for a five year period, he didn't really miss the game of being in the charts, making #1 hits...John was just content and happy by "watching the wheels roll 'round." John took up the cause of being house-husband, and raised his baby Sean during the long absence from the recording studios. John would one day go back into the studio and dedicate a very loving and tender song called "Beautiful Boy" - which was later acclaimed by Paul McCartney as his favorite solo composition from John. "Cleanup Time", found on the album, highlighted the daily mundane chores of what every house-husband goes through to make a happy home, and remain in a very happy one: "doing household chores!" Lennon's single releases of "(Just Like) Starting Over" and "Woman" both made it to the coveted #1 slot on the hit parade and showed us that John was still in fine form as artist and composer and, most important of all, house-husband. * SOURCE OF QUOTE: The Lennon Tapes, December 6, 1980, with Andy Peebles, published by the British Broadcasting Corporation. |
