RINGO STARR'S U.K. SINGLES
Ringo Starr probably has had one of the most interesting early solo music careers of all the Beatles. In England, he released "It Don't Come Easy" which peaked at #4 during April 1971. Then in March of 1972, Ringo issued "Back Off Boogaloo" which hit the number #2 spot on the music charts. His next release was "Photograph" and this song had a slow climb up the charts where it finally peaked at #8th position in November of 1973. The ever popular Johnny Burnette number, "You're Sixteen" (which Ringo recorded), managed to peak to #4 in February of 1974. After that, a few more hits flowed from Ringo which caused a somewhat jealous but very amused John Lennon to send off a telegram to Ringo: "CONGRATULATIONS. HOW DARE YOU? AND PLEASE WRITE ME A HIT SONG!* " (up until that point, John's last gold record occurred with IMAGINE in 1971 in the United States of America).
By 1976, Ringo's luck started to run out and most of his singles really didn't make much of a dent in the music charts. However, our brave back-beat drummer has managed a big comeback as of late: "Vertical Man" (on Mercury Records, 1998) contains a plethora of excellent songs composed by Ringo with Mark Hudson & company. One of the tracks from that album resulting in much radio air play was the hit song "La De Da!"
